Lincolnshire
Although Lincolnshire is very flat the lanes are as good as anywhere
If you want to overdose on life in the slow lane the lanes around Market Rasen in Lincolnshire could well be just what you are looking for, running through open countryside and farm land.During the day we drove two fords one of which is not to be missed if ever you are in the area.Every village has the nominal country pub for lunch or if you really want to get away from it all take a picnic. All the lanes can be driven by the newer motor but care will be needed on some of the lanes as they can get overgrown in summer and during a wet spell they can get muddy especially where they have been used for agricultual purposes.
All the lanes we drove where very clearly marked as to their status so there is no excuse to drive a bridleway or footpath and give the anti green laners more ammunition.
If you wnat to find the lanes we travelled use Multimap on my links page, just put in the start co-ordinates(eg;TF113941) and zoom in on the map to 1:25000 this will bring up an ordnance survey map of the area.
Some of the lanes we drove had a gated entrance which was just wide enough for the Discovery to get through with the wing mirrors folded in,I can only assume this has been done to try and stop the travelling community getting their caravans onto the lanes as we came across several encampments throughout the day.
The first lane of the day went from TF113941 to TF130924 a very pleasant lane, easy going through open countryside and grass fields. On the day we went it was dry and fine but the ground conditions were a little marshy in places and I think it could get very muddy in winter or prolonged rainy times. The lane showed very little sign of regular usage.
All the lanes are clearly sign posted
A short drive on tarmac brought us to our next lane from TF106920 to TF122903,a very easy non damaging lane through woodland, part way along the track we crossed a minor road to finish the lane at the B1203 where we then continued on tarmac to the next two lanes.
The first of these lanes runs from TF081868 to TF090871 and the second from TF100839 to TF108842.
Both of these lanes are rutted with agricultural use which can make for an interesting drive in wet conditions, they do get overgrown in summer so care must be taken not to scratch paintwork on the newer motors.
Two nice and easy lanes next took us from TF112866 to TF128878 and TF142876 to TF147884.Both lanes are solid ,the first through open farmland and the second through woodland to join the A631 from where we headed to Tealby to drive the shallow ford there.
For details of the ford at Tealby click on wetroads on my links page, scroll down, click on Lincolnshire and scroll down to Tealby, this will give you details of the ford and its co-ordinates.
Most of the lanes are very easy and a real pleasure to drive
Leaving the ford at Tealby we headed south through the lush Lincolnshire Wolds towards our last lane of the day from TF238770 to TF269761,again a very easy pleasant lane through open countryside and farm land with some lovely views across the Wolds. The route takes about 30 minutes to drive and if you want to chill out a bit more get the kettle on,have a cuppa and a chat and take in the feeling of solitude in this flat but beautiful county of Lincolnshire.
Although that was the last lane of the day we had a jem of a ford to come that Gary our companion knew about at Little Cawthorpe in the area, again use the links page, click on Lincolnshire and scroll down to Little Cawthorpe for the details.
The ford at Tealby
At first sight the ford looks narrow and shallow but as you enter the ford you can turn downstream and follow the river course for about 150 yards or more and as you get further downstream the water becomes deeper until you can get a decent bow wave going. If you've got a petrol motor and no snorkel just take it steady and you should be able to make it without mishap.
The ford was so good we drove it several times until the Discovery alternator started playing up but it soon dried out as we started our journey home to South Yorkshire and Derbyshire.
All in all a very good days laning and worthy of a return visit with possibly a caravan/camping weekend in the nicer weather during summer.
Cheers LES
