Hope Valley green lanes
Back To Home Page
The Hope valley as I call it is one of my favourite green lane days out starting at the Fox House Inn on the Sheffield/Hathersage road.If you want to follow this route you will need O.S.landranger maps No's 110 and 119.
The first lane starts about 200 yards from the Fox House at SK270805 and takes you across Houndkirk moor an easy enough lane for a four wheel drive but virtually impossible in places for a normal car.The lane varies along it's length from sandy smooth to rough and rocky but suitable for even the shiniest motor. The views over the moor are worth the trip.
At SK286826 you have the choice of going straight on,turning left or turning right. If you turn right you cannot get back onto the road at the end of the lane because the gated entrance to the road is too narrow.Straight on will bring you to the end of the lane at SK290835 and into the village of Ringinglow. If you turn left this will take you past Lady Cannings plantation and at the end of the lane turn right towards Ringinglow.
Lady Cannings plantation
A short lane next starts at SK295847 to SK288845 a pleasant lane but it can get a bit overgrown in summer.
Stanage Edge must be one of the best green lanes in the Peak District and Derbyshire Dales and is certainly one of my favourites.Starting at Redmires reservoirs at SK256852 the trail takes you from God's own county of Yorkshire into the beautiful Derbyshire Dales and the scenery as you travel this ancient pack horse route is absolutely stunning.
Stop at the pole which marks the county boundary for your first tea break of the day and have a look at the ancient grafitti carved into the rocks at the base of the pole.
Further down the lane a little care is needed to negotiate what I call the iffy bit but just take it nice and steady and if its your first time over the edge you will get a great sense of achievment that will stay with you for a long time.
Exit Stanage Edge at SK226843 and make sure your low box and brakes are working because the next lane is a bit on the steepish side.
Stanage Edge a real jewel in the crown of green lanes
Starting at SK214839 this next lane is part of the Bamford sculpture trail it is none damaging but very steep so low box 1st gear is essential.I once got a flat tyre at the top of this lane and because of the gradient I had to drive all the way down until I could find a place level enough to change the wheel.
The lane ends at SK208836 from where it is only a short drive to the next lane at SK212829 this is a tarmaced road but it is washed out in parts and four wheel drive is virtually essential to get you to the end of the road at SK225833 where you turn right down into Hathersage.
Shatton Moor is the next trek starting at SK202815 again an easy enough lane with some brilliant views across the moors. The approach and exit to the lane are steep and parts of the lane can get a bit muddy in the wet so please be careful and considerate of the conditions.
Leaving Shatton moor at SK183824 make your way to SK161824 for the short but very good Pin Dale lane.Part way along this lane is a bit of a clearing which makes for a good stopping off point for lunch. The lane does get a bit narrow in places between dry stone walls but any vehicle will be able to pass through without damage to exit at SK155819 where you turn right to the country lane and turn left for a couple of hundred yards and then join the Dirtlow Rake lane at SK153819.
On the Bamford sculpture trail
Dirtlow Rake is very stoney at the beginning but soon becomes smooth it takes you past quarry workings and there are some good views towards Mam Tor.As with most of the lanes don't forget to take a labourer with you to open the gates.Exit the lane at SK126826 and turn left to Sparrowpit and then turn right down towards Buxton at the first roundabout take the first exit and about 100 yards turn left into the next lane at SK087793.
This lane is once again none damaging and easy for any vehicle and as you come to the end you will pass Fresh Fields donkey sanctuary which makes for a nice stop to visit and possibly partake of the cream teas in the little cafe there.Entry to the sanctuary is free and any contributon to the upkeep of the sanctuary is voluntary. The donkey sanctuary does marvellous work and has rescued donkeys from spain in the past and is worth a visit and and a bit of support.
After your visit to the donkey sanctuary finish the lane at SK111785 and turn right towards the next lane at SK113773. This lane takes you down a shallow valley and can get a bit muddy in the wet but once through this part the lane becomes very stoney for the rest of its length.
A nice spot for lunch on Pin Dale
Depending on the time of year and the available daylight left the green laning for the day generaly stops about here but if you have the time you can try a few more lanes in the area just use your maps and go out and explore the lanes.Enjoy your laning but please be careful not to travel foot paths and bridleways as this will only give more ammunition to the anti green lane brigade.
cheers LES
may the green oval be with you
